Why Malacca: Themed Humanity Learning in a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Strategically located in the sea route connecting the East and West, the rich Melaka Kingdom drew in Chinese, Indian, and, since the Age of Discovery in the 16th century, as well the Portuguese, Dutch and British colonizers. In this trip, students will trace how different ethnic groups and colonial powers mingled and left their marks in a city which is like being frozen for several centuries. This cultural melting pot will certainly stimulate thoughts about how contemporary cultures may interact as globalization intensifies.

Student's Comment: Student, Age 12, South Island School

“Throughout the trip we were able to discover history, culture and skills which could be used in the near future. The food we were able to eat was very unique and cultural. In the orphanage, we were even able to experience hands-on (literally) traditional Indian style.”

“This trip overall was one of the most extraordinary trips I’ve been to so long! The stuff we learned along with what we did really made this trip worth every penny / cent / dime. Definitely worth taking a look at the trip to the orphanage and school were amazing. Children might not have contributed but we tried our very best and got everything to work in the end.”

Student, Age 13

The trip to Malacca was just fantastic, it wasn’t just any normal trip. It was a trip filled with culture, history and reasons. The trip can expand your understanding and it can change your character.”
