Xi’an, China (Language 100)

Learning Mandarin in the crucible of the Chinese civilization -

be stimulated for a life-long learning

Alternative Programmes:

Interdiscipline CAS

Why Xi’an?

Xi’an became China’s capital when it was first unified in 221 BC, and stayed as such for a major part of the 1st millennium AD until 907 AD – the end of the Tang Dynasty. Compared to Beijing or Shanghai, Xi’an was indeed the cradle of Chinese civilization. Xi’an will bring students back to the formative and consolidation years of “classic” Chinese culture, which is an important element for understanding the contemporary Chinese people.

Introduction:

Our Mandarin learning programme is highly adaptive to the need of your students. The case example below illustrates one of the various programme designs. As it lasted only for 6 days during the general travel week of the school, a classroom-based trip design would be too short to be effective. The focuses were therefore on:

Practicing / learning Mandarin with local students along with reciprocating English teaching sessions to them

Making vocabulary learning and sentence building fun and effective by doing exploring games in world-class heritage sites

Improved oral skills as reflected in their final performance in front of local students Improved writing skills as reflected in students’ diaries

“I found the Xi’an trip very stimulating personally and I know the kids found it very rewarding in terms of the opportunity to form relationships with the local students. The kids had a smile on their face throughout and that was an invaluable thing.”
