Teacher's Comment: S.Kripalani, Humanity Teacher, South Island School
“I found the Xi’an trip very stimulating personally and I know the kids found it very rewarding in terms of the opportunity to form relationships with the local students. The kids had a smile on their face throughout and that was an invaluable thing.”
Why Xi’an?
Xi’an became China’s capital when it was first unified in 221 BC, and stayed as such for a major part of the 1st millennium AD until 907 AD – the end of the Tang Dynasty. Compared to Beijing or Shanghai, Xi’an was indeed the cradle of Chinese civilization. Xi’an will bring students back to the formative and consolidation years of “classic” Chinese culture, which is an important element for understanding the contemporary Chinese people.

“II think the idea of the workbook really new and fun. It helps us learn and it makes compete with other teams, which is a really good thing. Also, I like all the group activities we had, for an example the Muslim Quarter orienteering game.”
“I like how it gives us the opportunity to learn more about Xi’an’s culture and history in an age appropriate and interactive way. This engages students and gets them interested, if not already. Also, it gives students an inside look on teaching, and also helps us to make friends. I didn’t know anyone a the start of the trip and had no confidence, but now it’s the opposite. ”
Clara, Student, Age 15

"This was an interesting, fun and amazing trip to Xian. The food and choice of restaurants, allowed us to experience traditional cuisine. Our local guide provided us with lots of history and stories from the past, this helped me experience Xian culture even better. I value this knowledge because then I can reflect on it in the future, to remember how the oldest city in China lived."
Kaitlyn Zhang, Age 13

"There are a lot of activities, but some of them are really special that people can hardly have that experience in their life. I really treasure this trip because I know that in the future, I won’t have a lot of chance to go to school trip with my classmates, especially when this trip has a lot of interesting and rare activities. Overall, I feel grateful to have a great experience."
Mumtahina Maksud, Age 13
"The trip was very fun. We learnt a lot of things in a period of five days. The trip included both modern and historical sites and was very relevant to the place we went. We learnt about 3 dynasties in the space at 5 days. The explanation for everything was short and reverse so it did not bore us but made us more engaged. The trip leaders are really nice. The check if everything is okay and if we have any questions so the can help us. The workbook and stamp system made us more competitive so we were thoroughly engaged with the activities. Overall, the trip was really nice and fun. I hope to join it again."
